Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts Celebrating Together the Birthday of Scouting

Cub Scout Pack 446 and Boy Scout Troop 446 of Scottsdale, Arizona, and chartered by Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church hosted a Blue and Gold Dinner Saturday, February 25th 2012.

Chompies generously subsidized the cost of the pasta and salad dinner, which more than 200 scouts and family members enjoyed.

Afterward, came awards – the Pinewood Derby trophy presentation, the Arrow of Light Awards, merit badges, boy scout ranks, and Eagle Scout Palms.

The highlight of the evening was the Flaming Arrow ceremony presented by Akela (Max Woods) and his trusty helper on the drum, Little Beaver (Chad Woods). Special thanks go to our new Scoutmaster John Keating for arranging the evening, and to Christa Keating for leading the feed that night.

My Brother, the Eagle Scout

He has his bad days, but most of the time he is a very nice person. There are kids in his class that do not have many friends, and do you know who the first person there? He is. Sometimes in the morning I forget to feed the dogs; so without saying one complaint, he does it with repayment. He has never put someone down, even under peer pressure. Kindness is a great quality to have, and he has it.

He is one of the most driven, hard workers I have ever seen. In football this season he was benched, not because he was bad, but becuase he hadn’t played before. Even though he was benched often, he was working twice as hard as any other player on the team. He tries really hard in school, he works so hard he gets a 4.0 GPA in honor classes. Whenever he has a test, I see him studying until his eyes drop out of his head. He has reached the rank of Eagle Scout not by sitting back, but by getting out there doing service, getting requirements done, and working his Eagle Scout project. He gives 110% to anything you give him, even if it is rather early or late.

He is a selfless person hands down. When I was in fourth grade I wanted a game really bad, so with about $25 in his wallet, he used 20 of his 25 dollars to buy me that game. When my mom and I were carrying groceries, he had set down whatever he was doing and helped us carry in groceries. He has done this numerous times. Whenever I leave stuff behind when I go camping, he lends me things that would make his trip more pleasant.

He has many great qualities. He is quiet enough, that many people do not see these qualities. He is someone who is always there to support you. I could not imagine him not being at my side giving me advice and actions to follow. He is a great role model, and above all, a great person.

F446 Scouting Family Campout – Cool Out at Deadhorse Ranch in Cottonwood This September

Deadhorse Ranch

Our Troop 446 has organized several troop outings, and two 500 person camporees at this wonderful state park in Cottonwood, Arizona over the years. It is a safe, fun campground! Our Cub Scout Pack 446 and Boy Scout Troop 446 will be camping there Friday, September 16-Sunday, September 18, 2011.

Our Boy Scouts will be there in full force. For many families new to Cub Scouting, and camping, let us assure you this event will be a blast! A scouting campout that your lil’ cubbies will never forget.

Here’s some advice for a great trip!

For Cubs - Parents, leaders and scouts prepare in advance for activities that will help them achieve goals toward their cub scout ranks. Meals traditionally are prepared as a cub scout group (*to be determined by cub scout leaders). Cubs stay overnight in tents with their parents/siblings. Tents are not provided.

For Boy Scouts – Scouts prepare in advance activities that will help them achieve goals along the Scouting trail. Boy Scouts will prepare tents by patrols, and have scout tent buddies. While their families will tent elsewhere. Since Boy Scouts will be cooking by patrol using the patrol method, Boy Scout families will plan on eating separately.

What about boating? There are no boats for rent at the river, but boating is allowed as an activity for the boy scouts only if they bring equipment, and life vests (we have several boy scout leaders that are Red Cross CPR certified, BSA Safety Afloat trained, and Safe Swim Defense trained). This will all need to be determined in advance.

What about horseback riding? That’s a great activity there, and in the past scouts and their families have reserved and paid for trail rides on their own (call for reservations at 866-958-7245).

What about fishing? There are several stocked ponds at the park, check with AZ Game and Fish for licensing before going.

What about liability? As with all scouting campouts we have to file a tour permit with Boy Scouts of America in advance of the campout by 2 weeks. So the Pack will be taking a roll call, and the Troop will be taking a roll call several weeks in advance. Please help them by RSVP’ing as soon as possible.

Are there expenses? Yes, they are small though and they may vary by Pack 446 or Troop 446. Ask at your next meeting.

Camp Whitsett Selected By Troop 446 for Next Summer Camp

Camp Whitsett

It is official, Camp Whitsett will be the “out-of-state” summer camp for Troop 446, summer 2012. See our page http://boyscoutsofarizona.com/summer-camp-2012-whitsett/ for links to their website and updates.

This camp is run by the West LA Council, who also own Camp Emerald Bay. We will not be attending Camp Emerald Bay in 2012, but will return there in 2013. We will start taking sign-ups for Whitsett soon.

Our in-state summer camp will be Camp Geronimo in July, 2012.

Camp Geronimo, Boy Scout Camp is Fantastic!

Recently some of the scouts from Boy Scout Troop 446 in Scottsdale, Arizona attended Camp Geronimo. It’s a summer camp run by Grand Canyon Council Boy Scouts of America. It’s one of the few camps in the country that offer a full-fledged horsemanship merit badge program.  6 scouts earned that merit badge while at camp, and claimed it was their favorite one. One of the great aspects of the horsemanship program is that it takes the scouts on trails outside the camp, that are hard to reach otherwise.

For more information about Boy Scouting and Troop 446 call Keith Woods at 602-475-8179.
